This has been both an exciting and challenging school year. As your new Director of Student Support Services; our departments have strived to provide high quality services to students while recognizing the deep effects of the recession and limited employment opportunities among our tax payers.
The greatest improvements and savings have occurred in Special Education. Our status as a brand new SAU has allowed for the restructuring of all our high school programs. District wide our policies and procedures have been implemented which reduce costs that affect our day to day operations, yet provide more superior direct service to students. Staff was also consolidated at the start of the year. Additionally, we have successfully returned ten students from costly "out of district" placements, thus reducing our overall budget by several hundred thousand dollars. All but one of these students is meeting with an unprecedented success back in district.
We were fortunate to receive Federal ARRA Funding which has provided much needed technology for our Middle School and computers in the High School Learning Center and Skills Development Program. A world renowned mathematics consultant, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, also funded through this funding, has been working with teachers and staff to improve mathematics instruction for all students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Outreach and support has been provided to Home School parents and students. Currently we have the highest number of home schooled students in the state of NH. Our current numbers are 119 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. This year 14 students have returned from home school education back into our district and are successfully being served.
Title One, a federally funded program, supports programs for students at Greenville Elementary and Boynton Middle School. Students receive needed academic instruction in both reading and mathematics. Currently 78 students are served in grades K through 8 by 3 tutors and one teacher.
Students with English Language Learner needs are served at Greenville Elementary and Mascenic Regional High School. A bilingual specialist provides English language instruction and tutorial support to these students, who are posting substantial gains in English Language Learning skill evaluations.
As you can see our student support services programs are meeting student needs yet operating in a fiscally responsible manner. It has been my honor to serve the students and families of SAU 87 as the Director of Student Support Services. I welcome your comments and input as we continue to strive for program excellence while maintaining fiscal integrity.
Respectfully submitted
